6TH FORM TEAM RESTORE SOME PRIDE AFTER WINNING THE THIRD AND CONCLUDING LEG OF THE 07/08 KING JAMES CUP

The Final leg of the Inaugural King James Cup was contested through a Basketball Match. Before the match began the 6th Form team were justifiably red-hot favourites

Having won the first two legs of the competition (Football and Dodgeball) the teacher’s team knew that they would have their work cut out trying to keep up with the immense skills and slick teamwork which the 6th form basketball players are renowned for.

Just hours prior to tip off, two members of the teachers’ team unfortunately had to withdraw, which meant that Elliot Gregg and Adam Close were drafted in to help the teacher’s team.

The squads were made up of the following players.

6th Form Team Teachers Team
Jonathon Bakewell Mr Bishop
David Butler Mr Black
Jack Gregory Mr Brown
Mathew Hopper Elliot Gregg
Michael Miller Adam Close
David Richard Mr Wales
James Steele

The teachers had to start the contest without the main attacking threat, Mr Black, but managed to win the tip off and to everyone’s surprise started to dictate the tempo of the contest. A slow methodical pace was adopted as a deliberate ploy in order to nullify the significant threat and pace that the 6th form team possessed.

Midway through the first quarter of the match, the teacher’s team had not only taken the lead but started to generate momentum through keeping the ball and good communication. However the 6th form’s individual ability and accuracy when shooting ensured the contest remained tight with little room for error
Towards the end of the first quarter Mr Black arrived, this was excellent news for the Teachers team but bad news for the 6th formers.

As the first quarter concluded, the teachers team led by 4 points owing to good work from Elliot Gregg, Mr Wales and Mr Black, whilst Adam Close was a steadying influence on the rest of the team, however at this stage of the contest a taxi had been ordered for Mr Bishop’s shooting ability?

At the start of the second quarter Hopper, Miller and Butler took control of the game and started to dictate a lot of the play, scoring baskets and allowing their ability to shine through. Mr Black’s presence and powerful drives towards the basket ensured that the teachers kept the lead, whilst both Elliot Gregg and Mr Brown contributed points throughout the quarter. The second quarter drew to a close with the teacher’s team maintaining a four point lead.

Prior to the contest very few people would have predicted that the Teachers team would be winning at half time, however, could they maintain their hard fought lead.

The start of the third quarter saw the teachers develop a 10 point lead. This visibly galvanised the 6th form team who started to apply relentless pressure on their opponents. The teachers lead was quickly cut down following swift movements and powerful attacking play from Miller, Hopper, whilst Jack Gregory, David Butler and Richards allowed their cool head and excellent court presence to dictate the tempo of the contest which their opponents were finding hard to live with.

As the third quarter of the match concluded, the teachers lead the contest by 3 points.
Could they do the Impossible and beat the much feared and Revered King James 6th Form Basketball team. The last 12 minutes of the contest were sure to be interesting!

Jonathon Bakewell and James Steele were brought into the 6th form team at the beginning of the 4th and final quarter.
At this point of the contest the teachers were grateful to both the skilful and flamboyant Elliot Gregg and the assured and accurate passing of Adam Close which helped to support the powerful and influential play displayed by Mr Black.
As the final quarter got under way, Mr Wales’s anticipation and awareness led to several valuable points for the teacher’s team, as the thought hard to keep ahead in the contest. Jonathon Bakewell and James Steels both contributed to the students fight back whist a determined Mathew Hopper increased his impressive point’s tally, to bring the contest to 6th form team to within a point of the teachers.
With little over four minutes of the contest remaining the 6th form team took the lead for the first time in the whole match, but within heartbeat the teacher’s team had levelled the score. Heading into the final 90 seconds the 6th form regained the lead for the second time. Chances then came for both teams but the talented and efficient student team managed to see off the determined and well organised teacher’s team and win the contest by 2 points, the slimmest of winning margins, 51 v 49.
Both sets of players displayed mutual respect at the end of a great contest with handshakes all round.

Star Players for both teams.

THE ACTION REPLAYED
Having acquired the majority of Teachers with a surname beginning with the letter B, The Teacher’s team won the first ever King James Cup, and the second leg of the Competition. The competitive nature of the first leg was sure to be duplicated as representatives from both squads met in the school sports hall to participate in a game of Dodgeball.

The first team to win 5 games would win the contest, and it was the Teachers team who took the initiative by winning the first two games.
The power and Accuracy of the Teacher’s team throwing capabilities seemed to catch the 6th Form unaware, who could muster little in reply as the first two games, were won very quickly.
However the 6th Form team quickly regrouped and used their athleticism and fitness to level the contest by claiming the next two games and level the score.
The 6th Form team’s athletic ability, showed through during the third and fourth games. With quick movement and precise throwing the students were able to eliminate the teachers and consequently proved their determination to win the contest.
The Teachers won the 5th game to move into a 3 v 2 lead.
With the contest finely balanced a competitive 5th game was contested with both teams giving their all to gain a slight but important advantage and edge closer to winning the second leg.
The Teachers won to move into a 3 v 2 lead, but both teams deserved credit for the attacking nature in which they played.
The Teachers won the 6th, 7th and 8th games to seal victory.
At this point of the contest the 6th form team were playing with confidence, and rightly so, as their precise throwing, teamwork and speed across the arena, caused the Teacher’s team a lot of problems.
At times during the 6th and 7th games, the Teacher’s were frequently outnumbered, due to good play from their opponents, and had to dig deep to sustain heavy pressure from the 6th Form’s team attack. Teamwork was crucial for the Teachers team at this point, and good communication enabled them to get a strong foothold in the contest.
The See-saw nature of the last 3 games was played at a fast pace, with both teams giving their all to win. The desire to win by both sets of players was evidential as a Controversial end to game 7 meant that game had to be replayed.

The teacher team won the Contest by winning the replayed 7th game.
With the contest over, handshakes all round saw both teams appreciate the efforts and ability of the other.

With only the third Leg of the competition remaining (Volleyball) can the 6th Form team use their athleticism and speed to gain some pride or will the Teacher team win the King James Cup with a clean sweep of events.

Special thanks has to be given to Mr Middleton for his excellent commentary
during the Dodgeball match.
The sport is fast paced and at times, frantic, but the standard of coverage throughout the event was persistently high.

TEACHERS WIN FIRST STAGE OF THE KING JAMES CUP!

The first leg of the King James Cup got underway on Thursday 6th March, with the much anticipated Staff team Vs Sixth Form football match.

A bright start by the Sixth Form team saw Thomas Delve rattle the woodwork with a powerful strike from 25 yards. After 10 minutes the teacher’s side established a strong foothold in the gain by controlling the midfield area. A good move by the teachers resulted in a penalty being awarded, as Mr Saunders was fouled. (Some may deem this as a controversial moment, however the general consensus from the spectators, was that the penalty decision was correct)

The penalty was confidently dispatched by Mr Laybourne.
This goal fired up the Sixth Form as they rallied hard for an equaliser.
They did not have to wait long for their reward.
A good corner kick by Michael Ross was met by an attacking header from Jonathon Bakewell which flew into the back of the Teacher’s net.

Following the equaliser by the Sixth Form, the Teachers dominated the last 25 minutes of the first half, with creative play from Mr Longstaff, Mr Connell, Mr Wales and Mr Laybourne, who constantly supplied the lively and sharp duo of Mr Rowe and Mr Saunders up front.
Two quick fire goals by Mr Wales and Mr Rowe following attractive flowing football by the Teacher’s midfield ensured their team deservedly led at the break.

The second half saw the Sixth Form lose the influential Thomas Delve who made way for Richard Summerson, whilst Jack Henderson made way for James Steele.
The second half started the same way as the first half finished with the Teachers dictating much of the play. As the teachers pushed for more goals, the 6th Form’s goalkeeper Adam Close played well, and was protected by Mathew Moralee and Shaun Nicholson, who had to be at their best to avert danger away from the goal.
At this point of the match Mr Brown, Mr Bushby, Mark Connell and Mr Stephenson, were playing with assured confidence in the teacher’s defence and effectively averted any danger from Mr Bishop in the Teacher’s goal.

With Half an hour to of the match remaining the reliable Mr Stephenson made way for the attack minded full back Mr Black. With the match starting to come to its climax the 6th Form team went all out to try and score some goals. Consequently several good goal scoring opportunities were created. Richard Summerson and Lez Webb both had chances to pull goals back. Even though they couldn’t find a way past Mr Bishop in goal they still pilled forward. In the dying moments of the contest Gavin Johnson made a good run down the right wing, out pacing several Teachers before forcing a good save from of the keeper. From the resulting corner Jonathan Bakewell won the ball but hit shot went over the crossbar.

By this time there was no way back and the final whistle blew with disappointed faces from the 6th formers and a relieved look from the teachers. This was a good result for the teachers, but there is confidence amongst the 6th Form and they will be determined to gain revenge when the 2nd leg of the King James Cup is contested.

The 2nd leg (Dodge ball) will be contested on Wednesday 12th March.
