Litter

Our classroom is next to the  hedge, which  is next to a public  pathway used  by schoolchildren .There is a lot of litter there. So we  wanted to know  what types  of litter were the biggest problem  and  maybe see  if we  could do something about the problem . We went  on our litter  mission, armed  with rubber gloves , big black  bags, long litter pickers , clipboards  and tally charts .You can see our  group photo  all ready to go, on this page. Then we split up into  groups of  four . As we picked up the  different types of litter we recorded it  on the  tally chart because  we didn't want  to sort through it all again .One group picked up 239 pieces of litter, and  we all  worked  for  45  minutes.

We were all shocked at the amount of litter we found because we hadn't looked that closely before. It wasn't really our fault though. Lots of schoolchildren use the path and we often see them eating as they go by. So we went to see how many litter bins were there and we found absolutely none. Quite a few adults use the path too and they would use the  bins if there were some. We know that lots of bins have been vandalised, we're writing to the council to see if there are any they would put along the path. We need to do our bit too, so we'll clear as much as we can once a month. Everyone in our class volunteered to do that. The litter does make the one side of our school look messy and we don't enjoy that at all.

This graph shows how many items we found.
