The Peace Garden

In the space between the old school and the newly built classrooms a new garden is being created. The Peace garden has two parts: the Fruit Garden and the Sensory Garden.

The Fruit Garden on Day 1

The Fruit Garden contains fruit bushes and plants - gooseberries and raspberries and strawberries. Apple and plums trees have been planted. There are several raised beds for classes to grow flowers and vegetables. Parents, teachers and children work together to plan and create the different parts.

The Fruit Garden, some time later

The Sensory Garden

is a quiet place where children and adults can go to find some peace and get away from the busy and, sometimes, angry world we live in. This part of the Peace garden has

  • 11 different types of hedging around the edge, with different shaped and coloured leaves
  • Plants in the different shaped raised beds, which attract butterflies and insects and provide colour all year around; some have seed cases which make noises in the wind in the autumn
  • Wind sculptures, made out of natural materials, that make relaxing sounds when disturbed by the wind
  • A huge willow sculpture has just been planted which will grow into an enclosed space to house a class of children
