Laygate Minibus.

LAYGATE SCHOOL
POLICY GOVERNING THE USE OF THE SCHOOL MINIBUS.

Introduction

  1. The following apply to any motor vehicle owned, leased, loaned to or operated by this school for the transporting of pupils and staff on any journey irrespective of the distance involved.
  1. The Headteacher or authorised Governor only, are permitted to authorise any journey.

Safety of the vehicle
  1. The vehicle should be serviced on a six-monthly basis.
  1. The vehicle should have a safety check prior to any long journey or residential visit.
  1. All seat belts should be checked during each service, and worn during each journey.
  1. The vehicle must carry a First Aid Kit.
  1. The vehicle must carry a fully operational Fire Extinguisher.
  1. Drivers are required to ascertain that the following have been checked before commencing their journey: TYRE PRESSURE, DIESEL, OIL, WATER, WINDSCREEN, WIPERS, LIGHTS AND BRAKES.
  1. Vehicles must be equipped with 2 Warning Triangles.

Drivers
  1. The driver must be at least 21 years of age.
  1. The driver must have held a full licence for 3 years.
  1. The driver must have  had experience of driving a vehicle such as a minibus.
  1. All drivers must be proficient and have no serious convictions e.g. reckless/ dangerous/ driving/ drink driving.
  1. The driving licence must be produced for examination at school
  1. A Log Book must be completed at the beginning and the end of each journey. This Log Book must include Service Records.
  1. Drivers are required to take a ten minutes break during each 2 hour continuous driving spell.
  1. Prior to a driver being authorised he/ she is required to have a minimum of 2 hour supervised experience of driving a minibus on a variety of roads including motorway conditions.
  1. Where possible there should be two adults when accompanying  children in the minibus.

Safety of the children
  1. The vehicle must not be overloaded and must not carry no more than 16 passengers.
  1. All children must wear an individual seat belt.
  1. Once the children are seated the back door must be unlocked.

Use of the vehicle by other organisations
  1. A group who borrows the vehicle must sign a form agreeing to pay the first £200 should they be involved in an accident.
  1. Charges will be levied depending upon the organisation/ distance etc.
  1. The loan of the minibus is at the discretion of the Headteacher or Governor.
  1. The vehicle will be supplied with a full tank of city diesel fuel and must be refilled, with a receipt provided at the end of use.
  1. The vehicle is covered by AA Relay, in the event of a breakdown.
