Laygate is a large school divided into two main buildings, key stage one and two. The nursery is attached to the key stage one building, while the main entrance and offices are in the key stage two building. Two other smaller buildings next to the school are the staff / resources room and the toddler / before-after club rooms.

South Shields is located on the south bank of the River Tyne, close to Newcastle and Sunderland. The town has an important Roman site, with the Arbeia Fort at the mouth of the Tyne dating back to the second century. The remains of the fort can still be seen today and a full size gateway has been recreated on its original site.
