The old Laygate school was built in 1863 and this was demolished in 1971 to make way for the present school.
The new school was built along side the old school so classes could go on as normal.
In this picture most of the main framework is in place.
The old school was then demolished when the new school was complete.
These photographs are copies of a selection of old photographs of Laygate School and South Shields which we have in school to show the children the history of this area.
