"Accessing the Birmingham Community" (ABC) is an exciting new project funded by City Challenge and Taskforce in Birmingham, UK. It is run by a team of project staff from the University of Central England (UCE) Faculty of Education.

The idea of the project is to provide a supportive environment to allow schools in the City Challenge and Taskforce areas to develop and use the Internet as an educational resource. It is hoped that schools will be able to communicate with each other, with other Birmingham schools, with UCE and with the wider Internet Community and in so doing show the quality of work within local schools and the wider community.

In particular, we hope to achieve the following:

• a network of links between teachers and children of linked schools

• the accepted use of e-mail as a means of communication

• publishing of children's work and curriculum projects on the Internet

• development of learning and information handling skills

• raising of cultural awareness

• help for second language learners

• support for community language users

The project will link with other developments in the use of the Internet, in particular other initiatives in the Birmingham area. This will not be restricted to schools, hence the name "Accessing the Birmingham Community".

This vision is now beginning to be realized and 13 schools have already been "wired up" onto the Internet and have been provided with computers, e-mail addresses and Internet access. To support this we have already had two training days and more are planned.

More schools will be joining the project later on and we already have four schools with "associate" status.

The team of staff at UCE is now established along with the Project Office. School staff have now got time to experiment with the Internet and decide how it may be used within their own schools to support both staff and pupils.

Our web pages are now up and running!! Through these we will be able to share information about the project with other schools.

From September onwards, all the schools will be working to create their own web sites which they will be able to use to share information and publish children's work. There will also be several projects using the Internet taking place within schools and involving the wider community
