Physical
Education
Head of Physical
Education: Peter Daplyn
We aim to introduce
students to a broad and
balanced physical
education curriculum from
which they can later
choose to specialise. Our
expectation is that
students leaving Lord
Williamss School
will have developed an
exercise habit and will
have clear expectations
for their future healthy
lifestyle. Elements of
skill, creativity and
fitness are important to
the range of activities
offered and enjoyment is
an integral part of our
programme, which includes
individual and team
activities.
Resources
We have the following
facilities at both Lower
and Upper schools:
a large sports hall
a gymnasium
hard play area/tennis/netball
courts
extensive playing fields
dedicated facilities for
dance
a health education room
At Upper School there are
also:
2 squash courts
access to a state-of-the-art
fitness studio
a dedicated A Level
teaching suite
There are plans for a
heated indoor swimming
pool due to open in 2001
Health Education
Health education is a
compulsory module at Key
Stages 3 and 4. In Year 7
it is a 10-week module of
one lesson per week
taught by tutors. In
Years 8 and 9 the same
format is followed but is
taught by specialist
teachers. The programme
addresses such issues as:
Health and hygiene
Substance use and abuse
Exercise
Sex education and health
Family relationships, in
the light of students
developing maturity
Parents have the right to
withdraw their children
from the sex education
element, upon written
application to the
Headteacher.
Standards of
teaching range from
satisfactory to very good
... pupils understand the
work and involve
themselves wholeheartedly
in the activities... The
extra curricular
programme provides
opportunities for pupils
... in school, regional
and national level teams.
