RE
At Lydiard Millicent School we follow the Wiltshire Agreed Syllabus for Religious Education and also use the Wiltshire Scheme of Work. As a church school, the main emphasis is on the study of Christianity, although other religions, such as Islam and Judaism, are also studied.
Through the scheme of work, children will be helped to recognise the nature and importance of religious belief and practice. They will explore what it means to be a Christian, beliefs which Christians hold and will develop a sense of belonging to the Christian community. They will explore their own feelings, moral questions and values through ideas in stories and drawing on their own experiences.
Topics covered by the scheme of work include KS1 Special Books; Special Places; Special People; Celebrations; Asking difficult questions; and Communicating (prayer).
In KS2, topics include: Special Teachings (rules for living in Christianity and Islam); Holy Buildings; Holy Books; Founder (Jesus); Prayer; Asking difficult questions; and Community Life.
In Year 6, Judaism will be studied as a comparison and contrast with Islam. Children will investigate pilgrimage and commitment within a community.
New resources have been purchased to support the teaching of the RE scheme of work. These resources include: different bibles; a variety of story books for KS1; prayer books; Christian artefacts; pictures; and a set of Jewish artefacts.
Samples of children’s work is assessed, assigned a National Curriculum level and kept in each child’s portfolio.
RE is taught as a separate subject, but may also be linked to other areas of the curriculum.
Parents have the right to remove their children from all or part of Religious Education. Should this be the case, the Headteacher must be notified in writing.
