SEX EDUCATION

The purpose of sex education is to provide knowledge about the processes of human reproduction and the nature of sexuality and relationships. At the same time it should lead to the acquisition of skills and attitudes which prepare pupils to manage their relationships in a morally responsible and healthy manner. The aim of the school's programme of sex education is therefore to present facts in an objective, balanced and sensitive manner, set within a clear moral framework.

Pupils are helped to appreciate the value of a stable family life, marriage and the responsibilities of parenthood, great emphasis being placed on the loving, caring aspect of relationships. It must be remembered however that many children come from backgrounds that do not correspond to this ideal: sensitivity is therefore needed to avoid causing personal hurt. The teaching is intended to be complementary and supportive to the role of the parents.

Sex education is approached as an integral part of the school's personal, social and health education programme for Year 6, unless it should be considered inappropriate for a particular child for reason of the child's immaturity or circumstance.

Parents are informed when the programme will take place and are invited to pre-view the video to be used and to discuss the content. In turn this will provide the opportunity for parents to discuss this most important subject with their child/children in an open but sensitive manner.

The programme includes the following:-

    1. Personal Hygiene
    2. Healthy Eating/Digestive System/Skeleton
    3. Drug abuse
    4. The major organs of the body
    5. Sex Education

The aspects of the sex education programme includes:-

    1. Body parts
    2. The changes that occur from infancy to their present age
    3. Understanding puberty and the physical changes that will occur in girls and boys
    4. Reproduction
    5. The importance of choice and personal responsibility

The children are taken through this programme by the School Nurse, Rose Matthews, and the Year 6 Class Teacher. Children's questions are answered openly in a group or individual basis as appropriate and they are encouraged to discuss what has been involved with their parents.

Parents have the right to withdraw their child from all or part of the programme. Should you wish to do so, please inform the Headteacher after discussion of the programme
