The rain it raineth …

Gorge Walking

Just after getting off the minibus at Arne Gill. Note how clean and dry we all look.

And this is after getting back to the minibus after walking up Arne Gill. Wellies full of water and soaking wet underwear. A lovely combination.

Gorge walking basically consists of walking up a gorge. Fairly obvious really. Except that mere words can’t express the horror of feeling your wellies filling with cold gill water. And absolutely nothing can prepare you for the feeling of falling in for the first time and getting your suit full as well. Add to that the masochistic dunking in the mini-waterfall at the top of the gill and you have the recipe for a very wet but very enjoyable morning’s activity.

Zip Wiring

We THINK this is Kimberley hurtling towards oblivion on the zip wire. It might be someone else entirely though …

Another unnamed child experiencing the white-knuckle ride of terror aboard the Group 1 Zip Wire Express. If you recognise this child, please post a message on the Guestbook claiming ownership.

Abseiling

The Appersett Viaduct over the River Widdle. No laughing please.

Laura feeling upbeat and confident before being dangled off a bridge.

John beginning the descent from the top of the viaduct.

Insert your own caption please. My mind boggles.

Katrina showing real determination to complete a full descent from the viaduct.

Adam really didn’t want to abseil today but he had a go at a couple of smaller abseils then tackled the bigger one. Well done Adam.

Craig also showed real courage in having a go at abseiling when he wasn’t too keen initially.

Only in midair can we be entirely sure that Baldrick won’t get covered in cowpats. Cowpats can’t levitate, you see.

Day Three and Bobs wants a ……… (insert euphemism for going to the toilet here).

A very good night’s sleep last night, certainly for the staff at least. The children were shattered after Tuesday’s exertions and fell asleep almost instantly after going to bed at 10 o’clock. We awoke this morning to the sight of rain. Lots of rain. So much rain, in fact, that the initial site for Group 2’s gorge walk had to be changed  and we ended up in Arne Gill rather than Mill Gill, which was in spate.

The activities today have involved getting cold and wet again but, to their credit, the children have not complained at all. All reports from the instructors have been very positive and the children have been setting an excellent example of behaviour. There have been several examples of children really helping each other to cope with the strenuous tasks which is very pleasing to see, especially when it has occurred spontaneously.

We should take this opportunity to thank Mrs Smith, who left us at lunchtime today. Mrs Smith has worked incredibly hard to help out with running all aspects of the residential and we are very grateful for the effort she has put in. Mr Culley arrived at breakfast and worked with Group 1 today, assisting with their Orienteering and Caving activities. Unfortunately, Mr Culley had to return to Malton in the evening so couldn’t stay overnight. Mrs Buckton arrived just in time for tea (no real surprises there!) and will be working with group activities tomorrow. Mrs Buckton is reminding me that it is her Wedding Anniversary tomorrow, so there’s real dedication for you. Happy Anniversary Mr and Mrs Buckton!

The evening slot took the format of a Games night, involving a picture quiz, several games of Beetle and assorted other delightful japes. I’m hoping to get the Room Scores updated this evening (just so I can boast) and also post some messages on the Guestbook from the children here at Low Mill.

Don't forget to keep leaving messages on our guest book. Just follow the link from the first page.
