Welcome Back

Your children are a credit to you

W

e are delighted to welcome your children back to school for the new academic year and we must again compliment you on their excellent turnout. We hope you all had an enjoyable summer (apart from the rain!!) and we are very pleased to report that everyone has returned safe, sound and raring to go.

Successful Behaviour Policy (Messenger 185)

Y

ou should have also received a copy of Messenger No: 185,  which gives comprehensive details of our revised Behaviour Policy.  The latter has proved itself to be very effective over recent years and we look forward to your support again to ensure that your children have a happy and productive year.

‘Open Door policy’

Please remember that we cannot help if we are not aware of the problem.  We have an ‘Open Door Policy’ and you are warmly encouraged to make use of it.  This policy ensures that parents can have direct access (subject to availability) to the Headteacher, Mr. Culley, without the need for a prior appointment, either through a personal interview or over the telephone.

Animal Welfare Bill

O

ur thanks to all those families who returned hand and paw prints to support the RSPCA campaign to reform the Animal Welfare Bill and prevent animal suffering.  We had a good response from the children and positive letters in reply from the Prime Minister Tony Blair, John Greenway, the Member of Parliament for Ryedale and the Animal Welfare Section of  the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA). .

Citizenship Day

O

n Monday 19th July 2004, seven pupils from Malton School joined us for the day as part of their citizenship education.  Francesca Tanner, Jessica Wood, Alice Keane, Stewart Bulmer, Rebecca Kelly, Jennifer Galway and Richard Boyes, assisted in the classrooms and helped us to supervise the pupils during our KS2 Sports Day.

Successful Sports Days

O

ur KS1 Sports Day  was held on Tuesday 6th July.  The day began with rain and the event looked doubtful up to 15 minutes before the start. However, Mrs Buckton’s decision to go ahead proved to be an inspired one. The sun came out, blue skies appeared and apart from a strong wind we had a brilliant afternoon.

We had serious concerns about our KS2 Sports Day because it was rained off on Thursday 15th July.  However, we need not have worried because Monday 19th July, which was our reserve day, was bathed in sunshine and we had a most enjoyable afternoon.

Our sincere thanks to the Friends of School Association for providing the refreshments after each day.

‘Clothes Reunited’

I

f only this were true!!  At the end of the Summer Term we were left with piles of unwanted personal possessions.  In an attempt to reunite them with their owners all the items were put on display in the hall on Thursday 2nd September for each class to view.   Needless to say, the dozens of sweat tops, trainers, coats etc had no names. If these items are not claimed this half-term they will be disposed of.

Please put your child’s name on all their personal possessions. This includes clothes, shoes, lunch boxes and P.E. / games kit.

Cycle Awareness Programme

W

e are pleased to report that our Cycle Awareness Programme for this year will commence on Friday 10th September.  Only Year 6 pupils are eligible to participate and subject to the response to our initial letter we will run an 8 week course  this term.

Holidays in term time affect your child’s performance!

W

e continue to be concerned by the number of holidays parents are taking during school time and the effect this is having on the education of our pupils.  During the academic year 2003 / 2004 the number of pupils taking holidays during term time of 4 days or more rose by just over 18% to 116. It is important to note that we have not included figures for the number of pupils who take single or double days off school in order to have long weekends.

(Figures are for the number of pupils having a holiday during term time for 4 days or more).

Please avoid taking your holiday during school time

T

he Governors would like to remind you that  only in UNAVOIDABLE CIRCUMSTANCES will leave of absence from school for an annual holiday be granted for not more than two weeks in any year (Education Regulations 1981 – Regulation 12).  Parents must collect a Leave of Absence form from the secretary (SA22) & return the completed form at least 7 days before the first date of the proposed absence.

Long and short breaks from school can be very detrimental to your child’s education and can adversely affect their current & future progress.
