Trail-A-Bike

ourtesy of John Freeman ( NYCC School Travel Awareness Team) we have a Trail-A-Bike in school which we would like to offer for use by parents who enjoy cycling and who would like to cycle to school with their child.  The Trail-A-Bike is built for children aged 2½ to 6 or up to 85 lbs. The bike fixes on to an adult bicycle and is a safe and sturdy way to cycle with a young child. If you would like more details, please contact Mr Culley.

Established in 1985, Harvest Help provides practical support to rural communities in southern Africa, helping them to improve their livelihoods through sustainable farming and increased self-reliance.

Our target is to raise funds to purchase an assortment of agricultural supplies such as seed packs, trees, goats, chicks, tools and training, to help families    For more information log on to: http://www.harvesthelp.org/

Homework Policy

W

e thought it would be beneficial for parents, if we clarified our homework policy for this year.  Please remember that it is getting children into a ‘HOMEWORK HABIT’ that is of most importance.  Your child will need somewhere at home that is quiet e.g. away from the television, and that has a table where they can work. It is important that parents check homework diaries weekly. Diaries form a regular and informal line of communication with class teachers. Please sign them and add your comments or questions when relevant.

Key Stage 1 Homework

(DfEE Guidelines (1998): 1 hour per week)

Reception Year (Butterflies & Ladybirds)

Literacy: children will bring home a ‘Sound Book’ in order to practise writing and recognising different letter sounds

Numeracy: there will be no written work, but children may be asked to practise counting items around the house or saying nursery rhymes which include numbers

Years 1 and 2

Homework will be put into the children’s blue ‘Learn at Home’ books, and will usually be as follows:

Literacy: a short list of words to be learnt over the week for an informal spelling test.  This list will change each week and will support the phonics being taught in class.

Numeracy: each week there will be either some ‘learn by heart’ work, eg number names to 20; or a practical task, eg looking for shapes around the house

Science/Topic: within the course of each half term there will be a variety of practical or investigative activities, eg keeping a list of food eaten.

All Key Stage 1 children will regularly bring a book home to share from our library collection.

From time to time children may also be asked to bring items such as postcards or boxes into school: if this is the case, there will be a note about these in the Learn at Home book

Key Stage 2 Homework

(DfEE Guidelines (1998): Years 3 & 4 1½ hour per week. Years 5 & 6, 2½hours per week)

All year groups will receive homework on a regular basis following the general pattern outlined below.

Daily

  1. Reading (Either reading scheme or free choice book)
  2. Spellings – Learning weekly list for test
  3. Tables/Number facts

Weekly

  1. Numeracy – One piece of work connected with current numeracy learning objectives
  2. Literacy – One piece of work connected with current literacy learning objectives

Half-termly

  1. One piece of extended research work based on current topics or themes.

Children may occasionally be given other tasks to complete or work to finish off that is connected with their current schoolwork.

Homework will only be set for weekends if there is at least one day either side of the weekend for homework to be completed.

Homework will be set consistently but days may differ from class to class. Details can be found in the yellow spring-bound homework diary of each child. It is important that parents check homework diaries weekly and sign and add any comments they wish to make.

NB Homework will be set regularly and consistently but on occasion the timetable may vary due to other curriculum or school commitments.

Home circumstances may not always be conducive to working quietly and in previous years we have supported families by running a weekly homework club in school. However, only a few children made use of this facility on odd occasions last year.  If you have difficulty in providing your child with a suitable environment to complete their homework, please discuss it with their class teacher.

Families who do not have access to a computer are able to use the school ICT facilities by prior arrangement. Please contact Mrs Wells the Key Stage Two Assistant Headteacher for details.
