Prior to session 1975 / 76,  pupils of primary school age in Turriff attended the Primary Department  of  Turriff Academy.  At the beginning of session 1975/76, the Primary Department  became Turriff Primary School  with its own Head Teacher and staff.

Due to an increasing roll in both schools   it was decided to build a new  primary school for Turriff .  The construction of  Markethill School was completed in June 1981 and was occupied by pupils from primary 1 to primary 6 in August 1981.  The remaining four primary 6 & 7 classes remained in the accommodation at Turriff Academy until an  extension to Markethill was completed in April 1982 .

The Nursery was opened in August 1989 with two groups of 20 pupils. At present two groups of 40 pupils attend the nursery.

A Curriculum Support Base was opened in 1998 with spaces for 10 pupils who have special educational needs.

Accommodation

The school is a single storey, open plan building which is divided into 5 teaching zones. Three of the teaching zones house 3 class areas and two of the zones have 4 class areas. Four of the zones have a Quiet/Audio Visual Room , shared project areas, toilets and cloakrooms. One of the zones contains an Early Stage class, the Nursery and the Meeting Room, toilets and a cloakroom.

A disabled toilet is also available within the school.

Other accommodation includes a Music/General Purpose Room, a PE /Dining Hall, Canteen Kitchen and an Office Block.  Due to an increase in the school roll two temporary classrooms have been built in the school playground area.

Outside, the school has a tarmac play area and a playing field sufficiently large to contain a primary size football pitch.

Within the school are two outdoor courtyard areas - one of which was recently 'upgraded' by the pupils with help from one  of the local garden centres.
