| Branching Out Into A New Millennium | |
'The Turriff Advertiser' Councillor Norrie and Councillor Mair plant the 'Markethill School Millennium Tree' while School Board members and Mrs Morton, Head Teacher, look on. |
|
| To mark the
start of the new millennium the School Board and the P.T.A. have both made donations to
the school which they hope will still be around for people to look at and admire many
years from now.
The start of a new century is a special time but the start of a new millennium makes it even more special! Because of this the School Board and the P.T.A. felt it was appropriate to do something special to mark this once in a lifetime event! The school board decided to plant a copper beech tree in the school grounds in the hope that pupils will be able to watch it grow over the years and if the pupils ever revisit the school in the years to come they will remember the day that it was planted. Turriff Councillors Bruce Mair and Alisan Norrie planted the tree. The whole school came out to watch the ceremony and afterwards a pupil from each class helped by putting in a spadeful of earth each. In addition to the tree being planted a stone bearing a special plaque was placed near the tree to mark the event. Kind thanks go to Mr Ellis Duguid, Turriff Contractors, for donating the stone and for placing it in position. 2000 bulbs were planted at the end of last year so that when spring comes there will be a lovely splash of colour round the tree and the stone. Many thanks go to Charles & Michael Laing, of Turriffs Laings Nursery, who planted the bulbs round the grass area next to the car park. |

| P.T.A. Stained
Glass Window
The P.T.A. continued the celebrations
inside the school with the unveiling of their stained glass window of the school badge.
This project has been a long time in the planning with the window being made over the
summer holidays so that it was ready in time for the big day!
The window is located in the entry foyer of the school and will be seen by all visitors to the school. The unveiling was carried out by our two youngest pupils in school, Corrie and Hannah, who were assisted by Councillors Mair and Norrie again. A selection of pupils from primary 2 and 3 were at the unveiling as there would not have been enough room to have the whole school present. The window shows our new school logo, which was designed by some of our older pupils and our art specialist Mrs Moira Tedcastle. We are delighted with the window and we are sure that you will agree with us when you see it the next time you are in school. To round off the celebrations every pupil in the school will have their photograph taken next to the window that will be mounted on to a special card as a momento of the event. Mrs Morton rounded off the events by thanking everyone in the School Board and the P.T.A. for their hard work. She said that it was a very special day as it was our first day back at school of the new millennium and that it was fitting that it was celebrated in such a way. |
