Since Easter, year 5 teachers have been working together to give the children in their year homework on a more regular basis. They started off with a parents meeting where the purpose of the homework was discussed and how they were going to give the work to the children.

Most families have encouraged the children to do the homework and to send it back to school. The school wishes to thank all the families and the children for doing the homework with some children doing more than expected.

If your child is to do well at school then learning must be encouraged at home. This does not mean that the children have to have homework every night but rather the family help the children learn in other ways.

Reading stories to children as well as hearing them read on a regular basis is one way to help.

Using the library as a source of books in the home will help the children to read better.

Using numbers in the home to measure things, work out times of programmes and using money all help the children understand number better.

Cooking in the kitchen, using materials to make things help the children understand science.

Going on visits to different places–a museum, a castle, an old house or town or city all help the children understand history and geography.

All these experiences help your children learn better in school. Please, don’t wait for the school to educate your child. Do it yourself, they’ll make better progress in school.
