Another ex-pupil remembers the war years. By Sydney West 1936 – 1939 Whilst at Marlborough Road we won the Birmingham Dramatic Shield , with the Merchant of Venice – that would be about 1937, my sister was principle boy and I was one of the Negro slaves. Later we performed again at the Town Hall in front of the Lord Mayor and Council. My younger brother (1937 – 1939) was evacuated to Worcester in September 1939 when the war started. In 1941 when we were bombed out for a week and we and many others were given blankets and pillows and I and my family slept in my old classroom. Water was provided for washing etc. in the morning , then off to work. The Head Master at the time was I believe Mr. Hollick. I was in Mr. Webb’s class 3A. There was a Mr. Read and Mr. Evans, about the only teacher’s names I can remember . So from 1933 – 39 there was my two elder sisters, myself and younger brother there. They other than me all live in the USA and have done since the end of the war.
