If you don't like exams and are seeking an alternative, then maybe a GNVQ programme could be for you.!!
The Sixth Form offer two Edexecel (BTEC) GNVQ Business programmes at Advanced and Intermediate level. Both have been designed to provide a broad education as a foundation both for training leading to higher and further education or employment. This is achieved by ensuring students develop the skills, knowledge and understanding that underpin a range of careers and professions, including skills such as Application of Number, and Communication and I.T.
GNVQ assessment is continuous through grading of assignments, plus national set tests in the mandatory units. At the end of their programme students are required to produce a portfolio of work to show that they have met all the requirements of the units.
In addition to the above studies all students have a work placement within a business organisation in St. Albans. This is one day a week throughout the student's programme.
As well as GNVQ courses for the Sixth Form we also run units at Foundation level in Leisure and Tourism, Health, Social Care and Business. These are run in Years 10 and 11, forming a Pre-vocational programme and are aimed for students who find studying nine GCSEs too much.
In 1997/98 all Advanced students completed their GNVQ programme and one student obtained a Merit. They have now entered employment or career training.
Advanced students are currently running a Midland Bank Mid Bank within the school. This provides Marlborough School with banking facilities twice a week and develops numeracy and communication skills for GNVQ students.
As part of their career development all GNVQ students undertake interview and feedback sessions with trained staff from a range of local companies.
