Learning Support Faculty

The role of the Learning Support Faculty is:
- to understand and assess students academic and pastoral needs
- to work with subject staff to help students learn
- to help students succeed
Much emphasis is put on raising levels of literacy:
- progress is monitored by regular testing
- some students have individual education plans
- other students benefit from statement review meetings with parents Sometimes students have the advantage of being taught in very small classes, whilst others are supported individually by specialist teachers and assistants from within the school and external sources.

Students who have had learning support are now achieving higher grades at GCSE and an increasing number of them go on to further studies in the Sixth Form or Colleges of Further Education.

In addition the Hearing Impaired Support Team provide back-up to those with hearing impairments. Whilst mainstream staff are advised about the best methods to employ in teaching the hearing impaired. Other students participate in the Sign Language Club.

The role of Section 11 (English as a Second Language) team is to help to raise the achievement of ethnic minority students. Acheivement is monitored closely and results have improved substantially at GCSE. The number of ethnic minority students studying A-Level and GNVQ courses has risen steadily.

Liason with parents is an important part of the work and bilingual members of our team are able to communicate with parents in their home language, and offer support at consultation evenings.

The Learning Support Team is closely involved with the Librarian and the Home Work Club. This provides an ideal opportunity to suppport students with homework assignments and revision or examinations. The team is also fully commmited to the implementation of the computerised 'Successmaker' programme for literacy and numeracy.
