Marlborough School - Mathematics Faculty

Curriculum

The faculty consists of six full time specialist teachers who all teach in specialist rooms. In addition there is a fully equipped computer facility which is networked with the rest of the school. We also have a very powerful computer aided learning package, Succesmaker. which is used by students in all years.

All students follow the national curriculum and are taught, by specialist teachers, in classes which are set according to ability. The students are set during the first two weeks in year 7. All classes in a year group are taught in blocks; consequently if students appear to be misplaced in a set they can easily be transferred to a more suitable set. It is our aim that all students leave Marlborough with a GCSE certificate in Mathematics.

The A-level course that we follow is the London Modular examination which allows great flexibility. It is possible to follow:

AS Pure Mathematics
AS Pure and Mechanics
AS Pure and Statisitics
AS Further Mathematics
A Level Pure and Mechanics
A Level Pure with Mechanics and Statistics

Achievements

As a comprehensive school we have a varied ability intake. At Key Stage 3 we continue to perform at, or above the National Average for level 5 or higher. At GCSE 55% achieved grade C or higher. This is signficantly above the National Average. Over a quarter of those taking the exam achieved grade B or higher. At A level we maintained our high standards and have a large number of students taking up the challenge.

Extra Curricular

We have a newly insatlled computer suite which is open every lunch time and is already proving very popular. For our more able students we offer a Junior National Mathematics Challenge for years 7 and 8 and an Intermediate Mathematics Challenge for years 9,10 and 11. We also send students in year 9 to the Mathematics Master Classes at the University of Hertfordshire.
