Technology Faculty

Curriculum

Design and Technology is a multi discipline subject which comprises Resistant Materials Technology (Wood, Metal and Plastics) Food Technology, Textiles Technology and Graphic Products.

At Key Stage 3 (years 7,8 and 9) students are taught the National Curriculum for Design and Technology on a modular system. They experience all the disciplines during the course of an academic year. The method of delivery is intensely practical; students design and make a variety of articles in order to complete the syllabus. Students written and practical work is continuously assessed. At the end of the year we combine marks to give an ability profile. We then organise teaching groups according to this ability profile.

At Key Stage 4 (years 10 and 11) students choose the Design and Technology discipline they wish to pursue. All disciplines are taught to GCSE and each student follows a prescribed course over a two year period. Assessment at GCSE is through public examination and each student is expected to study at least one Design and Technology subject to GCSE level.

Achievements

The numbers of students choosing to continue their studies through to 'A' level continues to rise steadily. The overall pattern of examination results is good with Marlborough students performing to national expectations and above at GCSE and 'A' level.

Extra Curricular

In past years the Design and Technology Faculty has been involved in a variety of extra curricular activities and clubs. These have presented our students with a wide range of opportunities in addition to those found in the National Curriculum. As a result we have designed and built Pedal Cars, Go-Karts and Hovercraft. In general, clubs and activities take place after school and are available to all students in all years for either group or individual work.

At Marlborough we are proud of the successes achieved by our students and encourage them to maximise their potential whenever possible. They have always benefited from good equipment and enthusiastic teaching. By the end of this term we will have fully equipped and improved new facilities. There will be a total of 7 teaching rooms in our new Design and Technology Centre, providing the best resources possible for our students.
