Popular television personality Anthea Turner was in Netherton recently to officially open the new Mecca Bingo Club.
The GMTV presenter was on hand to call the first game on September 27th. There were joint winners of
this game who each won a trip for two to Disneyland, Paris with £250 spending money. After congratulating
the lucky winners, Anthea then departed and it was 'eyes down' as usual for the rest of the evening. One of the highlights of the opening night events was a cabaret act - eight-piece band The Alpha Connection - who even had the staff dancing in the aisles!
The new Mecca club is a £2.8 million investment at the Switch Island Leisure Park on Dunnings Bridge Road in Liverpool. It can accommodate up to 2000 players and has created 80 new jobs for local people.
Club manager, John Hughes, said: "The opening was a fantastic event and people are looking forward to real fun-packed afternoons and evenings in this superb new club. Thousands of members have already signed up and we've a host of entertainers, including Frank Carson and Stan Boardman, booked to appear in the near future to add a little bit extra to that Mecca Magic."
The ultra-modern club boasts facilities such as air conditioning, a restaurant, a licensed bar, regular cabaret entertainment and special arrangements for the disabled. It is a flat floor club with no stairs, extra-wide aisles and dedicated positions for wheelchair-bound members. In addition there are special parking spaces, specially-adapted toilets and an induction loop for the hard of hearing.
