You'll Never Walk Alone

The Hillsborough justice campaign received a massive boost in May when big names from the world of pop music came together to stage a concert in memory of the 96 victims.

The event was held at Anfield, home of Liverpool Football Club, and some of the greatest groups of the day were on the bill. The Bootleg Beatles began the day's music with The Stereophonics, Smaller, Dodgy, Space, Manic Street Preachers, The Beautiful South and The Lightning Seeds following.

Noel Gallagher from Oasis was spotted in the audience but he did not contribute to the music. 34,000 people filled the stadium to support the event and even the thunder and heavy rain could not dampen their spirits.

The music for the night was amazing with outstanding sets from Space and the Manics, but the stars of the show were The Lightning Seeds, who were joined by Fantasy Football League's Frank Skinner in performing the Euro 96 anthem, "Three Lions".

One of the night's most poignant moments was a special guest appearance from Holly Johnson, who sung "Ferry Across The Mersey".

The Lightning Seeds' frontman, Ian Broudie said: "When I think about the Hillsborough disaster I feel confused because nobody has ever accepted responsibility."

Nicky Wire, bassist with the Manics, added: "It's a cause that we obviously feel very strongly about."

Virgin boss Richard Branson, who sponsored the seven-hour extravaganza, said: "The loss of 96 lives is not easily forgotten and this concert will ensure that it never is."

It was certainly a night to be remembered and it is hoped that it will go some way to ensuring justice for the Hillsborough victims.
