Netherton and Litherland NOW! - Postman

Delivering the mail for 25 years

by Matthew Denman

MY GRANDAD, Walter Pete, worked for the Royal Mail, delivering post in the Netherton and Litherland area for 25 years. He was on the same 'walk', the name for the postman's delivery area, all the time, which included 600 houses.

He used to get out of bed at 4.30 am six days a week, good weather or bad! He would call on the elderly people to see if they were all right and if they needed any help. He would also watch out for the young children going to school. He knew everyone's surnames and if letters were wrongly addressed, he would still know who they were meant for.

His worst enemies were dogs and he ended up in hospital three times with dog bites. He never once bit back! He says that the postman's job is serving the public, which he did until he retired three years ago.

He still lives in Litherland and has many fond memories of his working days with the Royal Mail.
