Litherland Community Resource Centre

A brand new resource centre is now available for Litherland residents.

Officially opening the Litherland Community Resource Centre on April 12 1999, Sefton MBC Director of Personal Services Keith Parkinson commented on the superb refurbishment and added that he hoped the community would support the venture wholeheartedly.

Inside the building there is a new reception area and offices. There is a small kitchen where people can make cups of tea and also a training room equipped with state-of-the-art computers.

The resource centre is a place where people can take courses and train in a range of subjects. So far, interest has been shown in first-aid, computers, reading, writing and a home-work club for school children. There are also plans to work with young people excluded from school.

All courses will be free if they are pre-vocational or vocational. There may be a small fee for recreational courses. The centre itself will be self-financing with money coming from grants, residents groups' contributions and fundraising. It will be run entirely by volunteers and members of the Tenants and Residents Associations in the area.

Centre Chair Mike O'Brien said there was a real need for a resource centre in Litherland. "A lot of people in Litherland need the extra training and feel that school has failed them. They don't want to go back to school or college and need to gain confidence before they can do other things. They can come here and do the training and hopefully move on."

Funding for the centre has come from Sefton Council and the European Regional Development Fund. To contact the LCRC call into the centre or phone 330 5866.
