The Government has stated that by the year 2002, 80% of all 11 year-olds should be reaching Level 4 or above in their Key Stage 2 English SAT tests.
Each school has set targets for improvement for every year up to and including 2002 and figures show that significant progress is already being made.
The SAT results for Netherton schools leapt from 41.1% in 1996 to 61.7% in 1997. The increase of 20.6% was way above the increase of 7% across the whole country and brings local schools closer to the current national average of 63%.
From September 1998 all pupils in infants and junior schools will spend at least one hour per day on reading and writing activities in a concerted effort to boost standards even further.
Look out for ways in which you can help in this drive to improve the prospects of local children. Get involved by attending information sessions at school and contribute your time and talents towards improving literacy in your area.
