MEREWAY MIDDLE SCHOOL

ART POLICY STATEMENT

Art is a form of communication that is nurtured within the individual. At Mereway Middle School we value art as part of children's entitlement to a broad and balanced curriculum.

This policy reflects the mission statement of the school which states:

"We will ensure everyone has access to our excellent resources"

"We will encourage success and recognise and celebrate the achievements of everyone"

"We will create a purposeful learning environment in which work of the highest standard is produced and all individuals of all abilities are given every encouragement and opportunity to realise their potential"

We aim to ensure that all students undertake activities which offer opportunities for:

Art is a subject in which pupils' knowledge, skills and understanding are nurtured and developed. It also has a role as a learning and display medium in other curriculum areas.

Art is developed through activities which bring together requirements from both National Curriculum Attainment Targets: Investigating and Making and Knowledge and Understanding.

To achieve the above aims students are encouraged to experiment with and develop skills in both 2 and 3 dimensions using various media through:

Students study the elements of line and tone, pattern, shape and form, colour and texture through investigation and experimentation and with reference to the work of artists, craft workers and designers from the locality, the past and present and from a variety of cultures.

Art is taught by class teachers. The art co-ordinator is responsible for art development and implementation of school policy and is available to update, inform and support staff as necessary.

This policy is applicable to all teaching staff at Mereway Middle School and was produced on behalf of the SMT by Carol Preece.
