MEREWAY MIDDLE SCHOOL
GEOGRAPHY POLICY STATEMENT
In working towards achieving our mission
statement, all students at Mereway Middle School study Geography
as a valued area of the curriculum.
The study of Geography at Mereway Middle
School involves:
- The acquisition of appropriate geographical
vocabulary.
- The undertaking of field visits
and the use of a range of geographical equipment.
- The use of maps, globes in a variety
of scales.
- The use of secondary evidence such
as books, pictures, photographs, television and radio.
- The use of IT in connection to data
handling, mapping packages, and informational CD Roms.
- The study of places, both local
and further afield.
- The development of understanding
of the key geographical themes of Rivers, Weather and Climate,
Settlement, Population, Development, Tectonic, Geomorphological
process and Ecosystems.
Through Geography we will:
- Help children develop geographical
knowledge and understanding.
- Introduce them to geographical enquiry.
Engage them in questioning and analysing data, decision making
and drawing constructive conclusions.
- Help the development of a sense
of identity through learning about their own locality and its
relationship with other places in the UK and other countries.
- Develop children's awareness of
environmental issues through involvement in school initiatives
and challenges.
- Encourage an active role in field
visits
- Develop the awareness of differing
values and attitudes within society.
- Enable the children to make informed
decisions based on their own experiences and learning.
This policy is applicable to Mereway
Middle School and the children, teachers, parents and governors.
It has been compiled by Debra Knight in accordance with the original
policy dated 1990 and the new National Curriculum. July 1996
