HOMEWORK POLICY STATEMENT

We provide homework for all our students. The homework will vary in its nature and style, depending upon:

• their age
• individual needs
• work being covered in class at the time

In Year 5 and 6 homework will be provided three times a week, for a period of 30 minutes and will cover a range of curriculum areas.

In Year 7 and 8 homework will be provided every evening for a period of 30 - 40 minutes. Normally the tasks will be from the range listed below:

a) Work started in school to be finished at home

(this could be for any curriculum area.)

b) A specific homework task:

• to supplement or build on other school activity
• to develop additional skill
• to provide more practice
• to research an area prior to study in school
• to remedy a lack of understanding

c) Specific extension opportunities:

• to allow able and/or highly motivated children more time and therefore, perhaps achieve more than is possible in the time constraints of the school day.

A typical week might include:

• two or three pieces of work to finish off
• two specific homework tasks likely to be related most often to English, Maths and Science, but could also be from other areas of the National Curriculum.
• a piece of written French homework (every week)
  

An effective homework programme depends upon parental support. To facilitate this a homework log will be kept that provides an opportunity for constructive home/school dialogue. This reflects the mission of the school, which stresses the importance of working alongside parents to provide an outstanding education.

This policy is applicable to all teaching staff and students at Mereway Middle School

and was produced on behalf of the S.M.T. by Claire Trott and Ros Burman to clarify the original policy established in 1991.
