Key to using the phonics hand book

Programme based around multi-sensory sound sheets. Children learn the 42 letter sounds through the sheets.

Procedure

1. Sound sheet story

2. Do sound sheet (pc sec 1)

3. Reinforce sound on the following days using flash cards (pc sec 2)

4. As soon as sound sheet is completed the children take this home

Order of letter sound groups

Plan to teach one group a week.

1. s,a,t,i,p,n.

2. chr, e,h,r,m,d.

3. g,o,u,l,f,b.

4. ai, j, oa, ie, ee, or.

5. z, w, ng, u, short oo, long oo.

6. y, x, ch, sh, voiced th, unvoiced th.

7. qu, ou, oi, ue, er, ar.

In pc 6 and pc 11 are games to play when learning sounds.

Sound books

Every time a sound is learnt - child will stick it in their sound book. they will revise the sounds at home.

Auditory training

Teach children to blend sounds together

• Use word boxes (pc11) laminate and cut up

Children practice these at home - starting with work box 1 which they practice until fluent before moving to word box 2.

• Do work on identifying sounds in words (use only sounds learnt) being with cuc - ccuc - cucc

Writing

• Use homework writing sheets (pc sections) to encourage independent writing
• Activity - 'Draw a picture of your news'. I can then write a sentence that goes with this
• See worksheets pc sections 6-10. These worksheets are designed to help children to read and write independently
• Once all this has been achieved the next step is to try to encourage the children to write sentences independently
• When children are writing independently tell children (if unsure of spelling) to spell as the word sounds.
  

It is also helpful to have 42 letter sounds written on a card to prompt when a child can hear the sounds but cannot remember how to write the letters for the sounds.

If the child cannot hear the sounds in the words it is important for a child to carry on auditory training.

The following list is the main way of writing the vowels and these should be taught first.

All this is carried out in the first year.

Spelling

Alongside this the children should learn the following:

• The names of the 26 letters of the alphabet
• To recite the long and short vowels and know that 'y' can sometimes be a vowel as in words like sky
• Capital letters should be introduced gradually

Spelling programme

This should be introduced when the child has carried out all of the above.

• Look, cover, write, check of irregular spellings
• Tape of spellings to learn
• Test children's phonic knowledge using the tape recorder

e.g. write the two main ou's .......... answer ou ow.
