INITIATIVE: Special Education

Main Aims:
- To ensure children with Special Educational Needs are involved
in a wide variety of activities in shcool.
- To provide appropriate training for staff, particularly for
NQT
- To look at the possibilities of developing a career structure
for curriculum support staff
- To give staff an opportunity to look at the reaources available
- To continue to develop MAP provision
- To produce topic packs and resources for differentiation purposes
aimed at children with learning difficulties
- To focus on developing the staff's understanding of autism
and implement the TEACCH approach
- To produce a class/special work liaison book with children's
targets in
- To develop closer liaison between parents and school
- To continue to develop support in Maths
Period of Initiative: September '96 - July '97
Specific Objectives:
- Through action research team to target 1 child
each to try and involve them in school activities
- NQT training package set up
- To put curriculum support staff on appropriate
training courses
- To plan a resource exhibition and to intorduce
all new resources to the Special Needs Link Team
- To produce topic packs and resources for differentiation
at Level 1 and Level 2 of the National Curriculum
- To arrange staff INSET on autism
- To produce a termly target book for each DSP
child involved in group work
- Toset up a home/school liaison book and to set
up some group sessions for parents of children with SEN
- Through Action Research to set up some Band 2
programmes
Success / Criteria:
- Audit to look at Curriculum differentiation to
ensure each child has a broad and balawnced curriculum
- Termly monitoring of individual programmes, particularly
- To have at least two children in each class on
a MAP programme
- All staff showing greater skill in identifying
and working with children with SEN, especially Autism
- Increased parental involvement in programmes

- Begin appraisal of support staff
- To do a teaching partnership with staff on appropriate issues,
focusing on NQT's and Richard Dron
