INITIATIVE: Special Education

Main Aims:

  1. To ensure children with Special Educational Needs are involved in a wide variety of activities in shcool.
  2. To provide appropriate training for staff, particularly for NQT
  3. To look at the possibilities of developing a career structure for curriculum support staff
  4. To give staff an opportunity to look at the reaources available
  5. To continue to develop MAP provision
  6. To produce topic packs and resources for differentiation purposes aimed at children with learning difficulties
  7. To focus on developing the staff's understanding of autism and implement the TEACCH approach
  8. To produce a class/special work liaison book with children's targets in
  9. To develop closer liaison between parents and school
  10. To continue to develop support in Maths

Period of Initiative: September '96 - July '97

Specific Objectives:

  1. Through action research team to target 1 child each to try and involve them in school activities
  2. NQT training package set up
  3. To put curriculum support staff on appropriate training courses
  4. To plan a resource exhibition and to intorduce all new resources to the Special Needs Link Team
  5. To produce topic packs and resources for differentiation at Level 1 and Level 2 of the National Curriculum
  6. To arrange staff INSET on autism
  7. To produce a termly target book for each DSP child involved in group work
  8. Toset up a home/school liaison book and to set up some group sessions for parents of children with SEN
  9. Through Action Research to set up some Band 2 programmes

Success / Criteria:

  1. Audit to look at Curriculum differentiation to ensure each child has a broad and balawnced curriculum
  2. Termly monitoring of individual programmes, particularly
  3. To have at least two children in each class on a MAP programme
  4. All staff showing greater skill in identifying and working with children with SEN, especially Autism
  5. Increased parental involvement in programmes

  3. To begin Action Research on self esteem/Aspergers syndrome
  4. Training sessions set up for NQT's and Curriculum Support Staff
  5. To begin to look at Curriculum Differentiation Packages
  6. To begin to use the target book for each DSP child
  7. To being to use Home/school Liaison books for DSP children in year 5/6
  8. To begin to look at maths programmes for Band 2 children
  9. Begin appraisal of support staff
  10. To do a teaching partnership with staff on appropriate issues, focusing on NQT's and Richard Dron

  1. To set up some sessions for parents of children with SEN looking at a wide variety of issues
  2. Continue with pnt 4,5,6,7,8,9 from above
  3. Part three of the audit looking at Curriculum Differentiation
  4. Monitor to see how well Band 1 work/class support by support staff
  5. To monitor the development of MAP programmes
  6. Teaching Partnership if necessary
