MEREWAY MIDDLE SCHOOL
SPECIAL EDUCATIONAL NEEDS
POLICY STATEMENT
This Policy was developed in line with the 1993 Code
of practice and with close reference to Mereway Middle School
Mission Statement .
We aim to:-
- provide appropriate quality experiences/opportunities
for pupils with Special Educational Needs.
- equip teachers with the knowledge/expertise to
support pupils with Special Educational Needs.
- respond to changes in circumstances in Special
Education
- provide appropriate Inservice Training Opportunities
- raise awareness, within our community of the
differing needs of pupils today
We will:-
- identify and support pupils with a variety of
special needs
- monitor and assess these pupils progress over
a period of time
- ensure that all staff and governors are familiar
with the established policy.
We will achieve the policy aims in the following
ways:
- providing a framework whereby individual students
strengths and weaknesses, can be identified, and assessed across
a range of curricular experiences.
- establish procedures which ensure appropriate
levels of support are given to individual children.
- establish procedures which ensure that individual
progress is monitored, reviewed and evaluated over a given period
of time.
- respond to individual pupils needs whilst ensuring
access for all children to a broad and balanced curriculum.
- establish procedures which ensure that effective
lines of communication are set up, in our school, with other schools,
with external agencies and with parents.
This policy is applicable to staff, parents and governors
of Mereway Middle School. It is also available to the Northamptonshire
Support Teaching and Educational Psychologist service (STEPS).
It was written by a working party which consisted
of the Special Education Co-ordinator, the Special Needs Governor,
a teacher, a parent and a member of the Curriculum Support Team.

Policy Review - this policy will be reviewed every
year.
