Reading Initiative: Aims and Objectives

Aims:

1. For all children to be reading at a level comparable with their chronological age, or above, by July 1996.

2. To achieve an effective monitoring and recording system, which will be used to inform on pupil progress in reading.

Specific Objectives:

1. For all children identified with reading difficulties on entering the school to be highlighted and engaged in a specific programme targeted at achieving reading success.

2. For all children across the school to engage in regular, planned opportunities to develop effective reading based skills and strategies.

3. For all staff to maintain reading records to inform pupil progress and areas for development.

Objective 1 : Criteria by which children are initially identified.

- a reading age of more than 12 months behind chronological age (using Salford reading test)

- child in Year 5 or a child who has recently joined the school in another year

- any child identified to us by the feeder school as Level 1 in English

Children initially identified as having a reading age of more than 12 months behind their chronological age will automatically be assessed using the NAP phonics pack, highlighted to Alison and placed on a SNAR1. A specific programme tailored towards the needs identified through the assessments will be set up to run between home and school.

Children with a reading age of 24 months plus behind their chronological age will also be identified to Emma and should quickly move from Stage 1 to Stages 2 or 3 SEN. Their needs will also be assessed using a range of methods and placed on SNARS 2 or 3.

Objective 2 : Regular, planned opportunities to develop effective reading strategies.

- for younger children, reading diairies as a communication between home and school with the emphasis on home to hear child read daily - book bags?

- for older children, reading records for them to keep in consultation with teacher and parents.

- greater emphasis in ERIC throughout year groups on a range of reading opportunities (eg. paired reading, group reading, discussions about favourite books/characters, opportunities to act out pieces from books, rewriting endings etc.).

Maybe longer ERICS but not so often - 3 times a week?

- "book lists" which help to pair reading age with interest level available for teachers to help guide children.

- an effective record system that supports home/school system.

Objective 3: For staff to maintain effective reading records.

- format of school wide record system to be announced.
