MEREWAY MIDDLE SCHOOL

MATHEMATICS POLICY STATEMENT

The delivery of mathematics is through a multi-faceted approach including cross curricular and stand alone units of work. The highest standards are aimed for at all times. This reflects the mission statement of the school.

At Mereway Middle School we aim to provide three strands of mathematical activity:

Using mathematics - the practicalities of mathematical activity.

Communicating in mathematics - interpretation, discussion and recording.

Developing ideas of arguments and proof - questioning, predicting, generalising, and reasoning.

To achieve the above aims we:

a) Clear mathematical links with the theme.

b)Free standing work where there is no clear link to the theme

c)Number, which should run throughout the year in all year groups

a) Learning objectives - using National Curriculum level descriptors and Programs of Study

b) A list of activities, progressive and developmental

c) A wide variety of teaching styles and situations

The co-ordinator will ensure that relevant documentation is distributed to staff, be supportive in the work of the staff and attend one team meeting each half term to assist with the planning, maintain links with the whole school and external bodies, and monitor and evaluate the situation in school regularly.

This policy is relevant to all students, staff, pupils, and others connected to Mereway Middle School and was produced by Dawn Wilson to clarify and update the policy originally produced in 1990.
