MEREWAY MIDDLE SCHOOL
Modern Foreign Languages
Policy Statement
All students at Mereway Middle School study'
a Modern Foreign Language (MFL). At present the language studied
is French. Study of a Modern Foreign Language is not mandated
by the National Curriculum until Key Stage 3.
The MFL policy at Mereway Middle School is:
- to introduce students to language learning
in a stimulating and relevant way by means of a communicative
and active approach
- to instill an enjoyment and appreciation
of language learning
- to equip all students with a sound basis
for further language acquisition
- to enable students to apply their knowledge
confidently and competently in relevant, real-life situations
- to develop language and communication skills
which readily transfer to other disciplines to develop an understanding
of the cultural, linguistic and ethnic diversity in francophone
societies and, in keeping with the school's stated mission, to
apply their understanding to our own society.
Years 5 and 6
- Students experience the MFL in 30
minute once-weekly sessions through games, songs and short role-plays.
- Emphasis is placed on the development of
basic listening and speaking skills and a promotion of cross-cultural
awareness in the context of the MFL.
Years 7 and 8 (National Curriculum Requirements)
- Students are engaged in a broad range of
activities catering for their individual needs and talents which
give them opportunities to develop their language and communication
skills.
- The target language is used as the medium
of instruction and students are encouraged to respond similarly.
- Students take part in activities which
combine the skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing
in the target language whilst extending their cultural knowledge
and awareness. They are expected to complete one piece of written
homework per week (30 minutes).
- Students are given opportunities, where
appropriate, to develop and apply cross-curricular skills and
knowledge and to make use of new developments and technology.
- Students in Year 8 have the opportunity
to participate in a study visit to France.
