This policy outlines the teaching and organisation
of music education at Mereway Middle School. It was written by
the Music Specialist and Co-ordinator who has organised this policy
and has overall responsibility for the teaching of music.
The policy for teaching music:
The National Curriculum for Music is the framework
for all curriculum and instrumental teaching.
The musical elements form the focus of planning
for continuity and progression in students' knowledge, skill and
understanding of music. Activities are chosen which enable learning
within the context of year group cross curricular topics.
Music is taught:
Student progress is monitored, assessed, recorded
and reported according to whole school target database policy.
It is based upon students' knowledge, skills and understanding
of music in both curricular and instrumental learning. In addition,
instrumentalists are given a performance / practice grade each
lesson. Cross phase continuity and progression is enabled through
liaison, the sharing of expertise and data. Music is monitored
and evaluated by the co-ordinator and NIAS through lesson observations
in line with the Schools' cycle of Audits.
Everyone in year five is encouraged to pursue
an instrument. No selection is imposed. Connections with the professional
and educational music fraternity support the teaching and learning
of music.
This policy is applicable to all staff and
students at Mereway Middle School and was produced on their behalf
by Kevin Smart. March 1997
