Our home liason teachers spend time planning and organising activities with
parents groups. They regularly meet in school with parents of pupils.
The school believes that a close identification with the communities which we serve will have an impact on standards of achievement and quality of learning.
To this end we seek to develop community links where ever opportunities arise or can be created.
Moseley School has two home school liaison teachers and their roles are complimentary. These colleagues provide interpreter skills when parents visit school and are able to act as intermediary with the appropriate Year Head.
Their role also includes supporting pupils whose academic performance is a cause for concern in the areas of homework or coursework as well as providing a link for the induction of new pupils to the school.
Most importantly. our colleagues provide a line of communication for parents for whom English is not their first language. This service applies to all aspects of the school which may require support such as reports, advice with options and letters home.
The Parents Group meets regularly on Tuesday afternoons and is involved in a variety of activities in support of pupils' learning in school and at home.
The school has set up an agreement with this local cricket club which seeks to provide the club with a permanent home and in doing so to form a partnership between the school and the club which enables pupils at the school to participate in the activities of the club. We see sport within the community as part of the natural linkage between the school as a resourse and the needs of the wider community.
Benefits include the restoration and extension of the pavilion and the provision for Moseley pupuils to develop their cricketing skills.
The aim of the project itself is to activate young pepole within thw community to develop activities and projects for themselves. The process involves leading with specific projects and enskilling local Youth to carry them forward beyond the end of the funding period.
The project workers are based at the Sparkhill Centre ( 753 1105 ) and liaise with a variety of Moseley School staff.
Projects have incuded:
Girls Club
Football Coaching
Residential Projects
Drama and Music
Placement of Pupils for Work Experience
A number of future projects are being planned and may include Study Support and an information shop.
The Sparkhill Home Reading Project
Moseley School is involved in the community based Sparkhill Home Reading project which has received funding from the City to develop the role of parents in support of their children's learning and in particular their reading. The project involves a number of local junior schools, Sparkhill Library and the Sparkhill Community Education Officer, Peter Simpson.
A reading resource pack has been made available to each of the school involved and each is developing its own programme of parent support. At Moseley School we are particularly interested in developing sibling support for reading.
Aspects of the Project:
Workshops for Parents to help enskill parents to support their children's reading
Workshops for older brothers and sisters to enskill them to support the reading development of their younger bothers and sisters.
Courses for parents to develop English language skills.
GNVQ accreditation for parents to begin to build up their own education success.
We are pleased to host commmunity events either through our lettings policy for events such as wedding receptions, or to sponsor directly events such as the Meena Summer Bazaar, a Qawwali Music Evening and an Indian Music Evening.
Local organisations as family businesses support the School's Record of Achievement process by jointly validating achievement beyond the school curriculum.
