A message from the Head Teacher, Mary Miles

This is I think the most exciting piece that I have written for the Moseleian gazette. We have secured funding of £4.5 million to restore and refurbish the Victorian building known to us as West Wing. Some work has already been completed but the total refurbishment will be finished in September 1998. The Heritage Lottery awarded us £2.25 million and European granted £1 million, the Birmingham Education Authority has funded the rest.
The facilities and exterior of the Sports Pavilion are also being improved by a grant from the Sports Lottery of two hundred thousand pounds. 1997/98 looks as if it will be a very special year in the history of Moseley. I would like to thank all those involved in supporting the school to achieve this funding, much hard work and writing had to be completed prior to the long wait for the announcement of the funding.
The West Wing building will when finished be the Post 16 and Community Centre of Moseley School and we hope the facilities will be used by many community groups for conference facilities or celebration dinners.
Thank you all for your interest and support.

Message from the Chair for 1997
Good Heavens 1997 - for not only is it time for another Moseleians Gazette but on a personal note this coming July will see me celebrating 60 years freedom from Moseley Grammar School as older members will recall the late Jimmy Edwards remark "Whacko" !
Turning to the major purpose of the "From the Chair" we have left the year 1996 in which saw a number of success stories for the Association and even more credence must be given to the achievements attained by Mrs Mary Miles her Staff and many others involved in the negotiation of funds over £4,000,000 for the restoration of the original 1850’s building. The Association are proud to have had some small involvement as the building could have become rubble before the Millennium, and the original college building can now notch up it’s 150 years.
Not only has the School accomplished it’s plans for the complete refurbishment and repair but arrangements go even further with certain ground layout etc. which will provide the type of setting which one imagines existed in the early days.
It is also pleasing to note that the renovated buildings will not only be used for school educational purposes, but is to be opened for technical training, general study use and meetings etc. for the local community. An excellent development for the area put forward by Mrs Miles and her cohorts.
Your Association has also seen a flourishing year past where membership has grown to 237 and our first AGM was held in October and attended by some 45 members. At the AGM Mr John Singles relinquished his post as Secretary due to ill health and I would take this opportunity of thanking him for all his efforts and support since the beginning and Mr Richard Cobb who kindly volunteered to take on the post and was duly elected.. In November a Jazz event was held attended by almost 100 participants which proved to be a great evening and this was due to Tony Wright and his associates for making this a splendid and indeed profitable occasion. Both these recent happenings have been greatly appreciated by many of our members because it gave them the opportunity to meet not only Old Moseleians from their own years but to hear stories of the school down the years.
Finally, may I thank all officers on your Committee for their hard work and contribution and wish all "Old Moseleians", Staff and Pupils of the School A Very Happy and Successful 1997.
Derek Mayman
