Greater Manchester & Cheshire Branch

Our branch was started in 1968 in order to provide support for children and their families. Currently about 100 children attend our activities.

What Does Our Branch Offer?

TO CHILDREN we offer understanding, companionship and an outlet for their energies. Mostly this is achieved by Saturday morning activities held at a local school in Stockport during the Autumn and Spring terms and special Activity Days in the Summer. Our activities are carefully chosen to provide a wide range of stimulating things to do such as Astronomy, Chess, Problem Solving, Electronics, Spanish and Heraldry which have all been offered recently. Children love the challenge of working at their own speed and to a greater depth than is usual at school. For many it is the first time they have met someone of similar ability and this too can be a rewarding experience.

TO PARENTS we offer support and advice from the experience of those who have encountered the same problems. Parents meet others, share their concerns and exchange information. Anxious parents with children in conflict with school and family can be reassured and supported. We are a self-help group with access to trained counsellors to help families through times of stress.

TO PROFESSIONALS working with children, the Association offers a warm welcome. Anyone is able to join as an individual member and receive local and national newsletters, and we welcome visitors to our Saturday activities.
Professionals can learn about the results of NAGC research or refer to us in the course of their own work. Teachers with a difficult pupil often find it helpful to discuss the problems that arise and may be glad of the enrichment materials that NACE provide. Some teachers enjoy leading the activities and find the experience useful in all their teaching. Paediatricians and Health Visitors also help in detecting the early signs and alerting parents to the fact that they have a highly intelligent baby or young child.

We would like to acknowledge the support of Stockport Education Authority and the Governors of our local Stockport School for providing the premises for our activities.

All children need attention, sympathy and stimulation or their enthusiasm may be dulled and their potential never fulfilled.
