  MATHEMATICS FUN AFTERNOON

On Thursday 20 th December the maths department was lucky enough to be able to invite Angela Gould to lead a fun afternoon with Year 8’s. Unfortunately, there was only enough room in the lower school hall for 8X1, 8X2 and 8Y6! Special thanks go to the 6 th formers who helped out during the afternoon. Angela travelled all the way from London’s Kings College to be with us and she provided 3 activities. Firstly, there were 4 congruent shapes to make into squares. The next session (which was the best!), was making a football out of folded pentagons and hexagons. For those who managed to finish the football, there was finally a maths trail. The afternoon went very quick and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. Angela struggled to pick a winning football team, but the prizes went to Bethany Green, Elicia Bones, Rosie Somerscales and Emily Ward. Below are some of the students’ comments about the afternoon.

Mrs. S. Hansen

‘I thoroughly enjoyed the maths afternoon. It was a fun thing to do. It made a change to a normal maths lesson. I loved making the football and solving the puzzles that Angela put on the wall-they were challenging and a great laugh’ Bethany Rhoades 8PRI

‘I thought that the afternoon in the hall was most enjoyable and I will never forget it. It was much more exciting than any normal maths lesson. The best part of the afternoon was when we began to make a football out of pentagons and hexagons’ Kyle Edwards 8PRI

‘I thought it was fun and a good team building program. I became better friends with the people in my team’ Alex Turner 8SHU

‘I think the event we did, on making a football was really enjoyable, even though it made your fingers sore. But apart from that, I though it helped you learn in a fun way. One reason for this was because you had to work as a team and it helped you to improve friendships’ Emma Field 8LRA

‘I really enjoyed the maths afternoon with Mrs. Gould’. All the activities were very enjoyable and still challenging. The most fun activity was the constructing of a paper football. I would definitely do it again. It confirmed my suspicions that maths is in fact the best subject!’ Amy Walton 8HCR

‘I think the afternoon was fun and a new experience to learn about shapes. It was rewarding as my group created the winning football. Even if we hadn’t won, it would still have been rewarding. Overall, it was a great, exciting, fun afternoon’ Elicia Bones 8MJP
