(Asia Video Programme 2)

Introduction

This case study can be used in different parts of the specification. The issue investigates sustainable Water Supply in Dehra Dun. The hydrology of the area has been affected by the steel industry. Dehra Dun is now making changes to the steel industry and making water supply in the area Sustainable.

Introduction

Task 1

1.       Observe the video Asia 2000 Industry and the environment.

2.     Make a mind map of all the groups of people affected in the issue.

3.     How has the water supply in Dehra Dun been affected by the Indian steel industry?

In Dehra Dun the Indian Steel industry in its early ages wasn’t that much bothered about the environment and this shortsighted attitude was what caused the water supply to diminish.

As the Steel Industry started taking huge ‘chunks’ of rock out of the landscape people started to feel the after effects of the Industry’s abuse of the environment for the debris of the landscape after they took huge ‘chunks’ out of the hill slopes, drifted down and settled on the river bed and the water was slowing up.

When they took limestone out of the hill slopes the water just runs off instead of sinking in this creates the problem of having a flashy response but no ‘back-up’ water supply if there is no rain for a lot of days
