Summer School Activities
A group of  pupils and those from a neighbouring school signed up for extra art lessons during the holidays.  They are creating three large circular mosaics which will form the centre pieces for our Millennium Garden. The pupils are working with coloured paper preparing the final design. Others are cutting up tiles ready to make the three mosaic seats for our school. The pictures show Sheila Plews the mosaic specialist teacher who is tutoring the pupils.  Watch this space for updates on the development of the millennium garden

Mr. Carr Retires
On Friday 23rd July Mr. Carr our Deputy Headteacher retired after 28 years in teaching. The children from class 3 organised a pop concert in tribute to a very special teacher who has touched the hearts of many during his time at Nettlesworth. They ended the concert with their own rendition of Thank you Mr. Carr (to the theme of Thank You for the Music by Abba) as a personal thank you for all that he has done for them. Mr. Carr has taught at our school for 15 years and is well respected by pupils past and present, staff, governors and parents. We are all sad to see him go but it is not forever as he has promised to return on a regular basis and will be back at school as a supply teacher when he is not busy relaxing in his new garden shed, spending time with his family or on the golf course.

Netball Champions
This season our school netball team were league champions, each player won a special shield. They were presented with their trophies by ex-pupil Laura Brown (centre) who now plays netball for the England team.

Field Study Visit

The children from year five and year six spent a week away at the Middleton-in-Teesdale field study centre. They spent the week walking in the country and studying the local environment.

On Monday 17th May I (Kathryn Costello, ICT Co-ordinator) attended the ceremony for the regional finals of the Lloyds TSB Teaching Awards at Newcastle Civic Centre. To my great surprise and delight I was named as regional winner of  the Guardian Award for Most Creative Use of ICT in a Primary School and presented with a Plato (see picture). This award was a recognition of work carried out by the whole school, the children, all staff, parents and governors and therefore it is fitting that the award carries with it a cash prize of £3500 for the school.
I now go forward to the national finals with a chance to win a total of £20,000. The national awards ceremony will take place in London on July 11th 1999 and will be televised live by the BBC.

The Annual Easter Egg Competition

Every Easter the school holds a decorated egg competition. Each child brings in a hard, boiled egg from home which they decorate in a style of their choice. There are first second and third prizes for each class and every child in the school wins an easter gift (all donated by  The School Community Group).
Here are some of this year's winners.

Cross Phase Technology Day at the Hermitage School
On Wednesday 18th November our year six group visited the Hermitage School as part of our cross phase technology work. Prior to the visit the children received an e-mail invitation from their working partner from the Hermitage introducing themselves and establishing initial contact. Our children replied and began to plan their web pages to record the day's events.
The day was organised into two main work blocks, one morning and one afternoon session. During the morning session pupils from the Hermitage introduced our pupils to the Millcam Designer Software and helped them design a door plaque. This was then transferred to a milling machine which created the finished plaques.

In the afternoon our pupils demonstrated our school web site and introduced their new friends to web page authoring. The students then worked together to write individual pages about the event.

Musical Visitors

Today we were visited by a Wind Quintet who came to school to entertain the children and to tell us all about their instruments. Their instruments included a bassoon, an oboe, a clarinet, a flute and a piccolo. They played us a number of tunes including classical music, The Bare Necessities, The Flintstones, and The Pink Panther Theme  tune.

The Firemen come to Nettlesworth
On 5th November we were visited by the local fire service who came to talk to the children about fire safety and to show us round a fire engine. We were allowed to climb through the front of the engine and the firemen demonstrated all of the equipment including the floodlights and the sirens. All of the children tried on the fireman's helmet and their fireproof coats.

Benjamin Bear goes to Australia
Benjamin our class mascot has gone on holiday to Watsonia North Primary School in Melbourne, Australia. He travelled to Australia by air mail and writes to us every day from his classroom in Australia. Whilst he is away we have been joined by Cuddles the Koala. Cuddles stays with us in school and goes home with a different child each night. He uses an Acorn pocketbook and a bit of Koala magic to write a diary about his adventures in Nettlesworth. We e-mail this to our friends in Watsonia.

Launch of the School News
The start of the new school year brought the launch of the "School News". This is an information newsletter for parents, governors and friends of the school. It is designed to keep people informed about what is happening in and around school. The editorial team is made up of four children from year six (Jane, David, Jordan and Abby) and our Literacy Governor ( Mrs. Sonia Duncan ). Anyone in school wishing to submit an article should pass it on to these pupils. We are particularly keen to feature news of past pupils and friends of the village who may have moved away, so if you are a Nettlesworth ex-pat then drop us a line. This is an ideal opportunity to meet up with old friends.  nettsch@rmplc.co.uk
