The School and its Curriculum

Northfleet School for Boys is a Foundation school for pupils aged 11-19. The school's popularity enables the Governors to continue to appoint teachers of the highest calibre, to offer a wide and diverse curriculum, and maintain a level of resources appropriate to a modern, go-ahead school.

Northfleet school for Boys is a school of recognised excellence. The professional standard and commitment of the staff, the good behaviour and friendliness of the pupils and the above-average examination results were all highlighted in the school's OFSTED report. Northfleet School for Boys is included in the Good State Schools Guide - the only non-grammar school in Kent to be listed. In this selection of 370 'outstanding state schools', the school's high academic standards, excellent sporting and cultural opportunities and 'pioneering work' to assist pupils with reading difficulties are described as features of this 'much respected and popular school'.

The School offers a comprehensive curriculum designed for pupils of all academic abilities. It is proud, too, of its many innovations and developments which, combined with its emphasis on respect for traditional values, equips its pupils with the skills, attitudes and qualifications for a life in an ever-changing world.

At Northfleet school for Boys we recognise that transferring to the 'big school' can cause mixed feelings of excitement and worry. Our aim is to help the pupils adapt to the new and different demands of secondary education as happily as possible.

We know that pupils come to us with different levels of ability. Each boy has his own individual talent and potential. Consequently, the first year at Northfleet School for Boys is seen as a Foundation Year, where there is a particular emphasis on raising standards in the key subjects of English and Mathematics.

To achieve this aim, all the boys will have daily lessons in the computer rooms using the most up-to-date individualised Information Technology learning system 'SuccessMaker'. They will also be taught the full National Curriculum by a team of specialist teachers who will get to know each pupil very well.

This Foundation year offers a much smoother transition into secondary education, and prepares the pupils for the demands of a more differentiated curriculum from Year 8 onwards.

In many subjects the most effective teaching and learning occurs when pupils of similar ability are grouped together. Therefore, as the pupils progress through the School, they are placed in ability groups for most subjects. This flexible arrangement allows the most able youngsters to be extended and to progress rapidly, while those with learning difficulties can work at a slower pace and receive extra support individually or in small groups. These groups are reviewed regularly to ensure that pupils are correctly placed.

During Year 9, the School consults with pupils and parents to decide each pupil's timetable for Years 10 and 11. This timetable consists of a core of National Curriculum subjects, plus optional courses, which for most pupils will lead to nine GCSE entries.

At the end of Year 11 there are numerous opportunities. For those who continue their education, there are three main avenues:

These post -16 opportunities mean that there is plenty of choice for students who wish to proceed to Degree courses. The School has also established links with the University of Greenwich and De Montfort University, Leicester, which guarantees our students places if they complete their Sixth Form courses successfully.
