What are we doing?

There are eight tasks within the project:
  1. The provision of Internet access from CableOnline to the secondary school LAN servers. The project connects a feed to each school LAN via the cable infrastructure being installed by CableTel in Letchworth. The existing school’s LAN cabling will be used to give all existing suitable PC stations the required access to Internet.
  2. The setting up of a shared-access information library system called LENDIS of curricular resources and made available to all schools LAN’s via the cable network. Originally this was thought to be a CDROM server but attention has been given to alternative technologies, and will probably now be delivered over Internet.
  3. Provision of access to Internet and the information library system to all primary schools in Letchworth. This will be achieved by providing each school with an RM Internet-ready PC and printer and a means of connection to the cable infrastructure.
  4. Enable E-mail and conferencing between all schools, using Internet technology and tools, across the LEN infrastructure.
  5. Assist the Hertfordshire Careers Services to set up their Internet web pages, advertising jobs and training opportunities. This has already been achieved.
  6. Work with the Letchworth Library Service to offer school’s access via Internet and the digital library to library information including the lending catalogue and local information.
  7. Form a curriculum team from the schools to figure out how best to use the Letchworth Educational Network as a resource for delivering the curriculum and to run pilot projects on all academic subjects. This then ensures the acceptance and adoption of the new technology within the schools. The curriculum team also has the responsibility for defining the material required for the information library.
  8. Provide training to school staff who will then be responsible for carrying out training within the schools. User Guides will be produced by the project to distribute to new users.

LCET recognises the very small IT budgets of primary schools and the need to modernise and extend their IT capability. This project will therefore spin off an associated project to obtain major sponsorship to update the primary school IT facilities in Letchworth.
