Pupils who entered Letchworth Secondary schools in September 1996 and who were put on the intervention scheme showed an average reading age improvement of 10 months during the two terms they took part in the scheme. |

Rosemary Williamson, a former senior member of staff at The Highfield
School, has been appointed by Research Machines to do research for them
into Numeracy and Literacy in Primary Schools. Her time will be divided
between familiarising herself with the details of recent government proposals
and research and seeing how these can benefit Letchworth Primary Schools.

The Letchworth Garden City Heritage Foundation have generously made
money available for Westbury School to set up a Toy Library. This will
be a resource for the Mother and Toddler group which meets regularly at
the school.
This is an important part of the Parenting Skills Initiative. |

The parenting skills course organised jointly by Nevells Road Nursery School, local Health Visitors and The Noel Family Centre proved to be so successful that it is being repeated this term. A similar course is being planned for parents at Westbury School. |
