Parenting Skills Initiative
Letchworth Initiative to Support Local Families with Young Children

This brings together the agencies that support parents with young families to see if it is possible to provide, jointly and with limited resources, help and support.

The initiative came about as a result of concern regarding the problems the schools are experiencing

  • in teaching children how to read
  • having to deal with an increasing number of children with acute behavious problems.

The initiative is being co-ordinated by LCET and involves

  • Health Visitors
  • The Library
  • Homestart
  • The Noel Family Centre
  • North Herts Education Support unit
  • Herts Education Service
  • Social Services
  • North Herts Language Support Centre
  • Local Nursery and Primary Schools.

Wednesday "Drop-in" Coffee Mornings at Westbury School

We have a spare classroom at the moment, which is also used for our Toddler Group. Toddlers and babies are welcome to the drop-in and have toys to play with while we chat. It has worked out that every other week has been an open forum, with the other weeks having a pre-arranged focus. For instance one week Shire Catering are coming to give a presentation on school meals - this is in response to questions from parents on this subject.

It has happened that individual parents have taken the opportunity to have a private consultation with the Nurse, knowing that she would be in school at this time.

At the moment the group is not large, but people are beginning to spread the word and we hope to see more. One immediately apparent outcome is the increasingly relaxed relationships that become possible when opportunities are available for frank and open discussion. I hope that we can begin to empower parents to express their needs and decide how to meet them, we will do our best to help by providing contacts, resources and space to enable parents to follow through their interests.

Funding has now been obtained from the Letchworth Garden City Heritage Foundation for this purpose.

Parenting Skills Lessons as part of PSE

A group of teachers responsible for delivering Personal and Social Education (PSE) within the secondary schools, is exploring ways whereby parenting skills might be introduced into this part of the curriculum.

Talks to Mother & Toddler Groups

We are hoping to give talks to young mothers about the importance of reading to children and, in conjunction with the library, to suggest appropriate books. This builds on the "Cuddle up with a Book" initiative.

The parenting skills course organised jointly by Nevells Road Nursery School, local Health Visitors and The Noel Family Centre proved to be so successful that it is being repeated this term. A similar course is being planned for parents at Westbury School.
