St Birinus School and The Business Community

The area is surrounded by a thriving business community. There is a high concentration of engineering and scientific research establishments within or just beyond the school catchment area. A large number of new technology industries are now established on local industrial parks, particularly at Milton Park and Southmead Industrial Estate in Didcot. Two large national supermarket chains also have distribution centres in the town which has easy access to the A34, M4 and M40.

A host of smaller companies are well established in the area and housing is expanding rapidly. Didcot Parkway is Oxfordshire's busiest railway station, with easy acess to London Paddington, Swindon, Bristol, South Wales, Oxford and the Midlands.

1996 Marks the Diamond Jubilee for St Birinus School. As we look back over the last 60 years with a sense of pride and nostalgia, we also turn our thoughts to the future, and the changes which lie ahead.

The School Governors wish to share with you a vision for that future.

A vision in which:

  • The School and the local Business Community are working in partnership together.

  • Young people are becoming more technologically competent.

  • Teachers are encouraging students to become independent learners by using the latest computer technology.

  • Employers are recruiting young people who are able to demonstrate competance and confidence in a range of transferable skills.

  • Standards of achievement are raised at all levels particularly in mathematics, science, technology and communications skills, as well as vocational awareness.

  • The School becomes a centre of technological excellence by working in partnership with the local business community.

  • The School has the opportunity to become a centre of excellence, with generous additional funding direct from central Government.
