Parochial C.E. Junior School – R.E. Policy

(Following a series of staff meetings, September-October 1997)

Having read the Wiltshire S.A.C.R.E. document we have gone forward to accept its proposals as our R.E. policy. We are guided by its Aims and Purposes for R.E.; our Programmes of Study come from it.

________________________________________________

Aims:

Religious Education aims to assist pupils in their own search for meaning and purpose in life by examining those aspects of human existence which give rise to fundamental questions about belief and values.

As an integral part of that process, it aims to provide pupils with knowledge and understanding of Christianity and other major religious traditions represented in contemporary British society.

At Parochial R.E. may be taught discretely or as an integrated part of topic work. Some elements are more readily integrated than others. In line with our school status, Christianity will be the most prominent religion studied.

________________________________________________

Time Devoted to R.E. Activities:

As an aggregate we should aim to do half an hour per week of R.E. These half-hour sessions may be combined if it is felt that a particular theme warrants a more concentrated period of study, e.g. – a Church Study.

________________________________________________

Structure:

Linked to the planned two year cycle of half-termly topics, where possible. Some discrete teaching of R.E. will be necessary for certain aspects of the POS. The attached scheme of work outlines the statements of attainment and chosen activities planned for each half-term topic.

________________________________________________

Chosen World Religions other than Christianity:

Lower School – Judaism.

Upper School – Islam

________________________________________________

Record Keeping:

School Portfolio showing samples from each topic/theme.

Individual pupil records will not be kept or annotated work collected in this subject

________________________________________________

Use of Artefacts:

The school will use county and diocesan library collections of artefacts where they are available and will begin to build up a school-based collection of artefacts that address particular

aspects of R.E. Pupils will be encouraged to bring in and share any appropriate artefacts from home.

________________________________________________

Coordinator:

Mark Gillyon is the school’s coordinator for R.E.

The governor w.r.f. R.E. Is David Chatterton.

Subject Budget:

It is anticipated that in the school’s next financial year an annual R.E. budget of £200 will be set up for the purchase of new books and artefacts.
