NEWSLETTER - Autumn Term 1998

Dear Parents,

Staff News
We welcome Miss Nicola Lane and Mrs. Deanne Daines to the staff. Miss Lane is working with Class 9 and Mrs. Daines is our Special Needs Co-ordinator. We wish them both a happy and successful time at Pevensey and Westham School.

New Children
We welcome all new reception age children and several older children who have joined us this year. We wish them all a happy and successful time too. Classes 1 and 2 are experiencing difficulty lining up in the playground at 8.45 am because of the large number of parents congregating at that end of the playground. I must ask that when the bell rings, all parents should move back from the lines so that all the children can find their classes easily.

Wealden Environment
At the end of last term I wrote to tell you that we had reached the final stages of two competitions organised by Wealden District Council. We have now heard that we were the winners in the section for Energy Conservation and Waste Management and in recognition of this we received a cheque for £100. Our work in enhancing the school grounds through tree planting and creation of our pond area and the building of play equipment etc. was highly commended in the section for Environmental Enhancement. Well done and thank you to everyone involved.

Literacy Hour
You may have heard about this from your children or through the media and we would like to give you the opportunity to hear more about it. You are therefore warmly invited to come to school at 7.00 pm on Wednesday 30th September when the staff will be happy to introduce you to this national strategy. The meeting will be followed at 8.00 pm by the Friends Association's AGM. We hope to see as many as possible at this important evening in the school year.

Homework Survey
We are currently reviewing homework and would welcome any thoughts and comments you may have about it. They are perhaps best gathered through a questionnaire and your child should be bringing one of these home. I will ask that it should be returned to school by next Monday 28th September.

School Photographer
The school's photographer will be visiting on Thursday 1st October to take individual and family group photographs. In order to ensure that we know the type of photograph(s) you would like taken, it would help if you would fill in the slip at the end of this letter and return it to school by Monday 28th September. There is no obligation to purchase the photographs. We hope to start at 8.30 in the morning for those people with pre-school age children to be photographed.

Table Top Sale
The Friends Association have organised this for Saturday 26th September and there are still a few tables remaining. If you wish to book a table please contact Carole Henderson on 764206. The sale is at Stone Cross Village Hall starting at 10.00 am and the hall will be open at 9.00 for stall-holders.

School Uniform
May I remind you that certain items of school uniform can be obtained from the school. I know from comments that many of you make that you appreciate the school having a firm uniform policy. We have noticed just lately, however, some children wearing inappropriate footwear. Please ensure that your children are shod in safe, appropriate shoes and if necessary use us as an excuse to resist the demand to be fashionable.

Recycling Collections
We are informed that with effect from 1st November, paper prices are dropping from £30 per tonne to £10 per tonne. Can you all please try and help us collect three times as much! Thank you.

School Lunches
Can I please ask that children who bring money to school for lunches should bring it in a named purse or envelope but if it is the latter, please do not cocoon the whole thing in Sellotape as extracting the money slows down the lunch queue.

Our Neighbours
May I remind you not to park so as to block driveways at the beginning and end of the school day and in particular to please respect our nearest neighbours' wishes regarding the drive to the playground. They try to avoid using that drive at the busiest times of day but should they need to, I ask that their access be unimpeded. Please also supervise your children so that they do not wander on to their gardens. Your co-operation is appreciated.

Yours sincerely,

P.R. Fleming
Headteacher

To be returned by Monday 28th September
