SCHOOL NEWS - 8TH FEBRUARY 1999

Dear Parents and Friends,

Ofsted Inspection

It was encouraging to see so many of you attend the meeting with our Registered Inspector on Wednesday. Such meetings are an important part of the inspection process - the rest of which follows towards the end of this term - and so your interest in the school is important and appreciated.

Hailsham Kumon Study Centre

An independent centre has been formed in Hailsham to teach the Kumon method of learning mathematics. A two week trial is being offered. We must stress that Kumon is not in any way designed to replace or conflict with what is taught in schools. Instead, it exists as a supplementary learning facility for children who may benefit from extra practice . We wished to let you know that the opportunity was available locally. Please see Miss Laker (Class 10) if you are interested in further details, fees, times, location etc.

Absence from School

In the light of the recent disappearance of the two girls from Hastings, we are undertaking a review of aspects of the school’s security system. In the meanwhile I draw to your attention the relevant section of the school brochure. Quite clearly the second sentence takes on new significance and I must urge that you phone at the beginning of the morning if your child is away from school:

Absence from School

If your children are absent, it is important that we should know why. You should telephone or send a note on the first day of the absence to explain and say when you think they will return. If you are in doubt about their well-being - perhaps after sickness at night - it is better to keep them at home than send them to school. It is important too, that we should know how to get in touch with you quickly during the day so that we can make arrangements if they should become unwell at school. A telephone number of your own, a works number, or the number of a friendly neighbour can save a lot of worry.

If the absence is likely to be lengthy, two weeks or more, please let us know as soon as possible. We may be able to provide books and other work for your child if you wish.

If it is necessary for the family holiday to be taken during term time, please complete a holiday form obtainable from the "parents noticeboard".

Should it be necessary for a child to be excused P.E., games or swimming, please send a written request to school with reasons for the exclusion.

Children are not allowed to leave the school premises during school hours unless a written request is received.

Infants are not allowed to leave unless accompanied by a parent or other responsible adult.

Inset Days

Firstly, a reminder that before Christmas we arranged for next Friday 12th February to be an in-service day for staff. Schools have a lengthy programme of Literacy Training to complete and this day will contribute further to this. On the calendar of events sent home at the beginning of the year Monday 12th April was also set aside for staff training. This will also take place.

Next year is designated the ‘Year of Maths’ and schools are obliged to take a sixth training day in preparation for this. In order to benefit from expert input we will be joining other local schools in closing on Monday 28th June and NOT the last day of the Summer term as had previously been planned. Therefore the last day of the Summer term for the children will be Wednesday 21st July.

Recycling

A reminder that we are collecting used inkjet and laser cartridges - and get paid for doing so. We are doing well so far and hope to gain a new printer from the scheme. Many of you must have access to those in offices, one parent alone has brought in a huge number already. Please ask your IT support team or whoever else manages your printers.

Sainsbury’s School Rewards

From 14th March to 5th June you can collect these for school, if you have a Reward Card. This does not affect your own Reward points - although you can give us those too! If you registered last year, you are still registered. If you didn’t, please return the leaflet as soon as possible - look for the special box in the corridor. Friends and relatives can register too - ask at school for an extra leaflet or look in the store.

Yours sincerely,

P.R. Fleming
